TMP-M Band Lands Three One-Ratings At State

by GRACYN MILLER ’16

Last week, Thomas More Prep-Marian’s band traveled to Colby to compete at state, and came home with three number 1 ratings.

“They rate you on different categories. The numbers are 68-80 points to get a 1 rating, and we received a 71,72, and a 76 to get us three 1 ratings.  We were also the largest band there,” said Mrs. Kathy Amrein.

The band warmed up with “Bonnie Eloise.” Then, they performed “Where the Black Hawk Soars” by Robert W. Smith as their required piece receiving a 1 rating.  This feat was especially unique because the band only gets to rehearse during the school day.

“It is so tough to have a rehearsal this time of year,” said Mrs. Amrein, “Because there are so many activities going on.  So the big thing is they have to watch me because we are in a different environment, and it always sounds different in a different room.”

The 2016 senior class has received state band 1-ratings every year they’ve been in high school.  This year’s impressive showing at state band can be summed up in a comparison only Mrs. Amrein would make:

“It’s like a state play off game,” she said, “and we won.”
